"De Excidio - A Myth" by Matthew Smallwood
Here is the first story of our December issue...
"De Excidio - A Myth"
by Matthew Smallwood
Malo had never wanted to be a saint, let alone a prophet or visionary. He was content to work for the Ponticate, splicing theology and chopping logic, copying old manuscripts for redaction and correction, stealing late hours to write his Universal History. He could make words serve him like God used the elements. Soon, he would replace the aging Father Jaruman, and lead the improbable mission on the Northern Alps. But the heretical Hidden Isles, whose holy texts he admired for their literary style and had helped to save, were the last place he would ever want to visit. One could tell they had gotten it all wrong from reading their Vitae. It was all a question of understanding the power of words.

Caught Up
I am finally caught up on reading submissions for DKA and SR.
YEAH!
It only took reading 4+ subs everyday for the last three days. Whew. (Some good stuff in there though.)
To be honest, this is about the only thing I am caught up on right now. Plus, I know it won't last.
Still, it's a good feeling.

DKA: "Treatment Protocol" by Michael Heald
Today's story is one of my favorites. It's a science fiction tale about an encounter between two people who can't see each other for who they are, even though all the evidence is right there. To me, it's about the power of perception and how we tend to see only what we expect to see.
I hope you'll stop by DKA and this story a read.

I'm still trying to get over the fact that if you go to Amazon.com and search on my name, it actually brings up a book I had a hand in. Not one I wrote. But still, it's wild!

Time to vote for your favorites in the yearly Preditors and Editors Readers Poll.
I'm of course hoping your favorites include DKA, and authors and artists published in DKA, Sword Review, Ray Gun Revival, or Haruah. But vote for whoever you want, no one will know.
There are a bunch of categories and you can only vote once in each category. If you don't see your favorite listed, you can just write it in (thus nominating it and putting it in the running).
Voting is open until January 14th ONLY. So make your voice heard before then. ;)

SR & DKA Blogs Back Up
I think the blog spam at SR and DKA is now under control, so I have restored those blogs if you want to take a look.
(It's pretty much the same content as here, except they have cool emoticons that I don't have here in Movable Type land.)
A girl can never have too many blogs. ;)

DKA: "Dragon Stew" by R. L. Copple
Our first fiction for November is a fun dragon-knight-angel tale with lots of literary allusions. Can you find them all?
"Dragon Stew"
by R. L. Copple
Tease:
How do you make dragon stew? Take equal parts of one knight intent on killing a dragon, one dragon attempting to destroy said knight, and one unorthodox angel working to join them in holy wedlock. Simmer over an open fire, adding in a dash of love potion and deception for a week. Then spice it up with twenty-one hidden (to varying degrees) Shakespearian quotes for connoisseurs of literature to discover, wrap it in a Shakespearian style comedy and you have “Dragon Stew.”
WARNING: May result in gaseous fumes and flaming mouth.

DKA: "Damage" by Jane Lebak
The latest addition to DKA's October issue is a brilliant and moving story by one of our favorite authors. (How do you get to be one of "our favorite authors?" Well, you keep sending us great stuff and be a joy to work with.)
"Damage"
by Jane Lebak
Tease:
"A new human soul is entrusted to the wrong guardian angel. When the unborn baby is diagnosed with a fatal birth defect, the family's decision not to abort ends up having eternal consequences for the baby's guardian."
You may remember Jane's previous stories in DKA:
her award-winning "Even a Stone" and the humorous short "Rent-An-Angel."
(If you missed them, go check them out!)
On a personal note: I love this story! I wasn't sure I would. Abortion is a very volatile and divisive topic. Sometimes just the mere mention of it gets people all uncomfortable, angry and afraid -- no matter what side of the debate they are on.
I guess I'm one of those people because I get anxious whenever the topic comes up. But this story washed over my discomfort and swept me away. The difficult content is so story-specific that it is moving without being inflammatory. And the ending is so brilliant and heart-wrenching and soul-lifting that the payoff is well worth any initial discomfort I might have felt. Truth is, this story gets to me every time I read it.
