I must be feeling nostalgic because most of the music I have been listening to recently is from the late 80s — music like nearly everything from "Streets of Fire" plus "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins, "Waiting for That Day" by George Michael, and "When the Night Comes" by Joe Cocker, from that old Tom Selleck movie "An Innocent Man." It's all such good stuff.

So many great lines in there too, like...
"I got a dream when the darkness is over, we'll be lying in the rings of the sun."
- from "Streets of Fire."
This line is from "Tonight is What It Means to be Young." But I also love "Nowhere Fast," "He Could Never Be You," And "Hold That Snake."

And this from "Waiting for That Day": "My memory serves me far too well."

Here's one video from Street of Fire:

YouTube has a lot of them.

It’s 2012. If the Mayan calendar is to be believed, the world will end in just a few months.

I don’t believe that will happen, but 2012 certainly does feel like a time of great change. Hopefully it will be a change for the better.

I am reminded of this quote that I’ve seen on a butterfly pendant:
“Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, She became a butterfly.”

I'd choose transformation over destruction any day.

Recently I had to have minor surgery on the gums around a few of my teeth. This is only important because it meant I was under doctor’s orders to not eat any crunchy foods—no chips, pretzels, popcorn, seeds, nuts, etc.—while my gums healed.

This seemed impossible to me. A whole week without crunchy foods, I would never make it. But I did.

But then I went back for my follow-up and she expanded the crunch ban for another week. I thought for sure I wouldn’t be able to do it. But I did.

What did I learn from this? Apparently I have more will power than I thought I did. There are hidden stores of willpower locked away for emergencies.

I’ve even managed to cut out caffeine and chocolate at my primary doctor’s suggestion. How crazy is that?

Bottom line: I have to quit whining “I can’t,” because clearly I can.
